I think recognizing and remembering the events of 9-11-01 is a right and proper and thing to do. I also understand that it is a historical event with many complex aspects to it and news programs and documentaries would want to discuss those. What I don’t understand is why images of the jets hitting the buildings and the buildings  coming down need to be in the commercials to be shown over and over again. Why make the instant of death for hundreds or thousands of people the graphic image to represent the show during those quick breaks from American Pickers or whatever?

Maybe because so many idiots would claim that missiles hit everything in the absence of photographic evidence. Just look at all the stupid theories about what crashed at Shanksville, PA. I was looking at a video just today on YouTube from a camera in NYC that didn’t catch the plane impact and conspiracy theorists said that it was to hide the missile hit on the WTC.  With all due regard to the victim’s families, its better to show this than have increasing numbers of morons deny that anything happened.

We could get into a philosophical discussion about media possibly using a tragedy to invoke patriotism and whatnot.

I watched the same recorded footage somewhere on YouTube that I watched when I was in class and the second plane crashed hit tower 2 on live TV. I probably watch it once every couple of years. Still the craziest shit I've ever seen.

I absolutely do not have a problem with them showing the footage as part of a feature, but History was showing it during every commercial break for days. My mom is in town helping out and all she watches is American Pickers and I saw the ad  more times than I can count.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t show it in the features or document tries.  I mean showing it in the ads that pop up every 8 minutes for days on the History channel.

Easy answer: because it is an emotionally evocative answer which will connect the commercial to the emotions of the viewer.

Subversive answer: In order to desensitize the population to extreme violence and warfare, so that when the next 9/11 comes around our society will have the same exact response to it as we did in 2001.

The solution?

yep - I hate it, still haven’t really dealt with it other than to promise myself that I will not hesitate if a “lets roll” situation comes up AND not tolerate self centered/misiformed/childish hatred of those on the other side. And it motivated me to give blood - 5 gallons later there are hopefully a few folks alive because they have a little of my juice pulsing through their veins...

My life without a TV is rarely so satisfying as now. I use my iPad for  Netflix and iTunes and advertisers can go f%#k themselves.

I stood on the 47th floor of a building on E 3rd Avenue and saw the aftermath of the first tower falling. Seeing one standing and the other gone was strange, because we’d never seen anything but two of them. And the smell blowing up from downtown that night cannot be described. The events of that day should not be used to sell pizzas or used cars, nor should they be used to bolster the credentials of those who exploited it for money or political gain.

In the aftermath, we gathered in bars, and we lined up to donate blood. But no one needed blood. In this disaster, you died or you lived, almost without exception. I remember going with a buddy to a sporting goods store and buying all the white socks they had - the first responders needed lots of them. They were collecting things at the Hard Rock on 57th ... so that’s where people went, and to the fire stations . It was impossible to get below 23rd St, much less downtown, so the feeling of helplessness was made even worse.

My main issue every year when 9/11 comes around is they still show the bod ies falling from the buildings. Can you imagine being a family member having to brace every September 11 to see your loved one free falling because they did not want to burn alive?

We ain’ t no cowboys. Cactus Ed and I prefer the term “desert rat”. It also isn’t cosplay. I was forged in this desert.

I wrote a long piece about that day, and I assiduously avoided any images of the planes hitting the buildings. I know it’s part of the story, but it’s nothing I want or need to see again.

I was in a Journalism class of all places when 9/11 happened, so my classmates and I got more than our fill of coverage during the semester that followed. I hadn’t gone far in that particular educational track at the time, but with that event making it painfully clear how easily things can just fly in the face of the very reasonable fundamentals I had been taught so far, I quickly figured out that it wasn’t the career for me. Things like what you mention among countless others in news and media do a pretty good job of keeping me from ever regretting that decision.

I friended a feller in Ireland not too long ago.  He seems to think it’s a conspiracy.  I don’t know what to do, I don’t want to hate on someone for a single opinion, but....  come on.
